RIX Optics Storm S3R V2 Thermal Scope
A Completely Upgraded 384 Thermal Scope with LRF and Ballistics
The RIX Optics Storm S3R V2 takes one of RIX’s most popular compact thermal scopes and upgrades nearly every area that matters in the field. It retains the proven 384×288 resolution, 35mm F/1.0 objective lens and useful 3.5× base magnification of the original Storm S3R, but adds a new thermal detector, improved image processing, a larger high-resolution display and a much longer-range laser rangefinder.
RIX also redesigned the eyepiece, mount and rangefinder placement to make the Storm S3R V2 more comfortable behind the rifle and more compatible with both AR-platform and bolt-action rifles.
For coyote hunters working open fields, hog hunters who need accurate ranging and anyone wanting a lightweight thermal scope with built-in ballistics, the S3R V2 offers an impressive amount of capability without moving into 640-resolution pricing.
What Changed on the RIX Storm S3R V2?
The Storm S3R V2 is more than an updated housing. RIX made several meaningful improvements over the first-generation Storm S3R.
Feature Storm S3R V1 Storm S3R V2 Thermal Resolution 384×288 384×288 Thermal Sensitivity NETD under 25 mK NETD under 15 mK Image Processing Previous-generation detector New detector with RET Display 0.39-inch 1024×768 OLED 0.49-inch 1920×1080 AMOLED Laser Rangefinder 1,312 yards 2,187 yards Internal Storage 32 GB 64 GB Eye Relief 48mm 52mm Eyepiece Previous-generation design Upgraded distortion-resistant viewing LRF Position Right side Left side for improved bolt clearance Picatinny Mount Lower, shorter design Raised and extended QD design Rifle Compatibility Primarily AR-oriented Improved AR and bolt-action compatibility Weight Approximately 1 pound 1.16 pounds The V2 is slightly larger and heavier than the original, but the added size supports the upgraded display, eyepiece and extended mounting system while keeping the complete scope remarkably compact.
New Sub-15 mK Thermal Detector
The RIX Optics Storm S3R V2 uses a 384×288 VOx uncooled thermal detector with a 12-micron pixel pitch and sensitivity rated below 15 mK.
That is a major improvement over the sub-25 mK rating of the original Storm S3R. Lower NETD allows the sensor to recognize smaller temperature differences, helping reveal more detail when the surrounding terrain and target are close in temperature.
The improvement should be especially noticeable during:
- High humidity
- Fog and light rain
- Warm Southern nights
- Low-contrast thermal conditions
- Early mornings with limited temperature separation
- Hunting around crops, brush and wooded backgrounds
RIX’s RET Resolution Enhancement Technology further processes the image to improve clarity, edge definition and target recognition.
35mm F/1.0 Lens with 3.5× Base Magnification
The S3R V2 pairs its 384 sensor with a 35mm F/1.0 objective lens and 3.5× optical base magnification. This combination favors target detail and positive identification over an extremely wide field of view.
Digital magnification ranges from 1× to 4×, producing a total magnification range of 3.5× to 14×.
The 7.5° × 4.6° field of view covers approximately 13.2 × 8.1 yards at 100 yards. This makes the Storm S3R V2 particularly well suited for coyote hunting, open agricultural fields, power lines, clear-cuts and other situations where animals may first appear at longer distances.
The rated detection range is up to 1,969 yards under favorable conditions. Actual identification and shooting distance will depend on the animal, weather, terrain and environmental conditions.
Upgraded 2,187-Yard Laser Rangefinder
One of the biggest Storm S3R V2 upgrades is the new integrated laser rangefinder. Maximum advertised ranging distance increases from 1,312 yards on the V1 to 2,187 yards on the V2.
RIX also added enhanced sensitivity and weather-optimized ranging algorithms to improve performance in rain, fog and other difficult conditions.
The rangefinder is rated for accuracy within approximately 1.09 yards and can operate in continuous-ranging mode. Its new left-side location improves clearance around the action of a bolt-action rifle while remaining easy to access on an AR platform.
That placement change may sound small, but it addresses one of the most common problems with compact thermal scopes that were originally designed primarily around AR-style rifles.
Built-In Ballistic Calculator
The integrated ballistic calculator uses the measured target distance and the shooter’s saved ballistic information to display a suggested point of aim.
Ballistic profiles are configured through the RIX+ mobile app. The Storm S3R V2 supports five independent zeroing profiles, allowing the scope to store settings for different rifles, ammunition loads or suppressed and unsuppressed configurations.
The onboard attitude system can also display pitch and roll angle. This helps the ballistic system account for uphill or downhill shooting while allowing the shooter to identify rifle cant before taking a longer shot.
Larger 1920×1080 AMOLED Display
The original Storm S3R used a 0.39-inch 1024×768 OLED display. The S3R V2 upgrades to a larger 0.49-inch 1920×1080 AMOLED display.
The increased resolution provides a cleaner viewing experience, better reticle definition and more visible detail from the thermal image. RIX also redesigned the eyepiece with a larger exit pupil and 52mm of eye relief.
The new optical design is intended to maintain a consistent image when the shooter’s eye moves slightly away from the center of the eyepiece. This can make it easier to get behind the scope quickly when shooting from a tripod, standing position or unconventional field position.
Redesigned QD Mount for AR and Bolt-Action Rifles
RIX raised and extended the quick-detach Picatinny mount to provide additional fore-and-aft adjustment. The revised mount gives hunters more flexibility when setting proper eye relief and creates better clearance on bolt-action rifles.
The repositioned LRF module allows the bolt to cycle more freely, while the elevated mount improves alignment and shooting comfort across different rifle platforms.
The battery-cover locking position has also been revised for easier access when the scope is mounted on an AR-style rifle.
Compact Thermal Scope and Handheld Monocular
Despite its upgraded components, the Storm S3R V2 measures only 6.4 × 2.9 × 2.6 inches and weighs approximately 1.16 pounds without an external battery.
Its compact size makes it possible to use the S3R V2 as both a weapon-mounted thermal scope and a handheld thermal monocular. Hunters can scan from the truck, stand or tripod and then quickly return the unit to the rifle using the included quick-detach mount.
A dedicated thermal monocular remains the best option for hunters who scan continuously, but the S3R V2’s dual-purpose design provides valuable flexibility when minimizing the amount of equipment carried into the field.
Replaceable 18650 Power System
The Storm S3R V2 operates on one replaceable 18650 rechargeable battery and has a rated runtime of approximately four hours at 72°F.
Two 18650 batteries and a battery charger are included, allowing one battery to remain in the scope while the other stays charged and ready. The scope also supports a 5V USB-C external power supply for extended hunting sessions.
Runtime will vary according to temperature, Wi-Fi usage, recording and other operating conditions.
Recording, Reticles and RIX+ App Features
The S3R V2 includes 64 GB of internal storage—twice the capacity of the original Storm S3R—and records photos and videos at 1744×1072 resolution.
Recoil-Activated Video can automatically save footage from approximately 10 seconds before the shot through 30 seconds after it. This helps capture the entire encounter without requiring the hunter to manually begin recording before every opportunity.
